There is so much happening on the Internet during a year that it’s impossible to capture it all in a blog post, but we’re going to give it a shot anyway. How many emails were sent during 2012? How many domains are there? What’s the most popular web browser? How many Internet users are there? These are some of the questions we’ll answer for you.

To bring you these answers, we’ve gone to the ends of the web – wherever that is – and back again, and compiled a list of truly fascinating facts about the year that was. Some of the numbers are snapshots taken during the year, others cover the entire period. Either way, they all contribute to giving us a better understanding of Internet in 2012. Enjoy!

What about the Internet in 2013?

Just a couple of weeks into 2013 we don’t yet know much about what the year ahead has in store for us. However, we can perhaps make a few predictions: we will be accessing the Internet more with mobile devices, social media will play an increasingly important role in our lives, and we’ll rely even more on the Internet both privately as well as professionally.

Italy‘s Best Are Emigrating at Time of Crisis

For more than a century unskilled Italians have gone abroad to escape poverty, but these days the people running for the exits are among the country’s top brains.

A growing wave of technologists, researchers and entrepreneurs is flowing away from the motherland. Few think this weekend’s elections will do much to alleviate the gloom.

“I am Italian and I love Italy. But every time I come back to visit, I see the country is sliding a little further back,” said Andrea Ballarini, an economics graduate who left for the U.S. West Coast nearly three years ago.

When Ballarini graduated from the elite Bocconi, Italy’s best-known university, he had no plans to leave home and dreamed of setting up his own company in his native land.

But as economic crisis began to bite three years ago, the 32-year-old entrepreneur crossed the Atlantic.

“My business partner and I bought a ticket for San Francisco. We just wanted to check Silicon Valley out. We never came back,” said Ballarini, who was won over by the pro-business atmosphere of the West Coast and now runs a virtual business fair platform called HyperFair.

“Back in Italy, each day began with a list of the problems I had to solve. Here I make each day a list of the things I want to do,” he added.

Faced with soaring unemployment and declining economic activity, young Italians are following previous generations in seeking their fortunes abroad, disillusioned by an economy in which graduates must often take precarious and menial jobs.

Data from Italian statistical institute ISTAT show that the proportion of emigrants who have a degree has doubled between 2001 and 2010, to 15.9 percent of all migrants.

They go to European nations like Britain and Germany but also, despite working restrictions, to the United States, data from Istat show. Their monthly salaries are on average 540 euros higher than those of similar professionals who stay at home.

Lost Generation

Italians started to emigrate to north and south America in the second half of the 19th century. Another wave of migration began after World War Two.

“Those leaving Italy in the aftermath of World War Two and then in the 1960s and 1970s were in the majority very poor, unskilled workers. They became coal miners in Belgium or worked on infrastructure projects in Germany,” said Pietro Luigi Biagioni, who heads the Paolo Cresci Foundation for the History of Italian Emigration.

“Today’s migration is very different.”

Qualified professionals are losing hope in Italy’s ability to revive its stagnant economy and eradicate cronyism, red tape and a punitive tax regime.

Italy has been in recession since mid-20ll and the euro zone’s most sluggish economy for well over a decade.

At just below 37 percent, youth unemployment in Italy is the highest since records began 20 years ago. The “lost generation” has become a hot election issue.

Amid rising unemployment, even more posts than before appear to be awarded through connections rather than talent.

Some join the brain drain even before finishing education.

“A large number – tens of thousands – of those studying for a PhD or research post are leaving Italy,” said Mario Calderini, a special adviser to Education Minister Francesco Profumo.

“We are losing top quality students and researchers but are not attracting a similar number of high-quality people.”

Foreigners Stay Away

Italian universities are unattractive to foreign students and graduates because of the low wages offered to researchers, the complex hiring process and the use of Italian. According to OECD data, only 4 percent of those studying at Italian universities are foreigners and there are few foreign teachers.

Until recently, offers for university jobs were only published in Italian and the selection system tended to favor internal candidates from local universities.

Calderini said the technocrat government of Mario Monti had introduced the use of English for university job adverts, but much still needs to be done to woo foreign researchers, who tend to earn more outside Italy.

“The difference in salary is a factor as well as the risk of unemployment,” said Calderini.

“Not everyone is able to find a job as Italian industry absorbs very few of these highly-educated professionals.”

More than 95 percent of Italian companies employ fewer than 10 people. They do not have the resources to invest in research and development and the cash-strapped state is cutting back in its own research funding.

Some institutions are trying to lure the talented home.

The Genoa-based Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), founded only six years ago, specializes in bio-robotics, a futuristic branch of robotic engineering that has blossomed in Italy thanks to the country’s strong manufacturing traditions.

The institute, whose working language is English, has managed to bring Italian scientists back to the country by offering competitive wages, an international working environment and well-funded, innovative projects.

Around 17 percent of the scientists working at the IIT are Italians who used to work abroad.

“There are very few places in Italy where you can combine a technological background with scientific research,” said Diego Ghezzi, 32, researching synaptic neuroscience at the IIT. “If I hadn’t come here, I would have had to leave the country.”

Web presence key to good marketing

A detailed marketing plan is essential for any new product entering the market, particularly when online sales are part of the business strategy.

“The biggest thing about a digital sales model is that, if well planned and executed, it can create instant exposure for your business the second you implement it,” says Steven Karpenko, ICT Partner for the Business Development Bank of Canada.

The online world offers both opportunities and challenges, he notes. “Exposure on search engines and social networks is key to driving prospects to your website to maximize sales opportunities. The Internet can become a 24/7 online sales presence or virtual trade show for both small and established companies.”

But a lot of businesses put tactics before strategy. Although they see having a website as a mandatory part of doing business in the modern world, they limit their planning and execution to downloading a pre-fab template and more or less put up their brochure in an online format instead of thinking strategically.

“Currently about 75% of businesses still rely on an earlier version of their website but now need to closely align business and marketing strategy with their online presence.”

If their web presence is to be effective, Mr. Karpenko says, companies must focus on consideration of their ideal customer, what makes their products different and how the customer interacts with their brand and makes purchase decisions. Implemented online this results in calls to action that convert interested prospects into legitimate customers.

This type of planning is essential before establishing an online presence, he says; shortcuts rarely work and negative experiences online are hard to overcome. Without a long-term strategy and a commitment to keeping current, Internet exposure could result in negative reaction and “the brand could be at risk.”

“Web and social network content have to engage the customer and be maintained regularly. Proper execution also includes efficient online order management. Customers expect to receive products in good order and timely fashion and to be able to contact the company and receive good customer service,” Mr. Karpenko adds.

Before making a major commitment, it is vital for the business owner to “understand the fit of the business in its digital ecosystem and to study the trends impacting the Internet right now.”

The company also needs to have a certain degree of flexibility to adjust to the constant changes in buyer behaviour. “A web presence is now as important an investment as human resources. Plan, track, measure, adjust and adapt as you go forward.”

Employers say these online forums—accessed by companies and job seekers from anywhere in the world—can save them time and money, as well as broaden the candidate pool.

When participants log into a virtual fair, they can access a variety of “booths” organized by company name or job field. In the booths, they find information about the company and positions available. Sometimes there are videos or live, one-on-one chats with recruiters or even high-level executives.

Candidates learn about fairs through the company’s website, social-networking services such as Facebook and Twitter, or word of mouth.

Procter & Gamble Co. and Citigroup Inc. customize their own company-specific virtual career fairs. Other firms, such as Boeing Co. and insurer Progressive Corp.,  join broad-based virtual career fairs hosted by companies like jobs sites Monster.com, which is owned by Monster Worldwide Inc., and Brazen Careerist Inc. The group fairs host anywhere from a handful to hundreds of companies.

As companies find themselves swarmed with applicants, struggling to match workers with the right skills to job openings, many are turning to virtual career fairs. WSJ‘s Emily Glazer has the story on Digits.

The fairs, which may last from several hours to a few days, are less about landing a job offer, say HR experts, and more about generating interest among candidates. Good candidates can be invited back for deeper, in-person interviews, while candidates who are not a great fit will be weeded out early on, they say.

At a P&G European virtual career fair last October, about 900 attendees logged in from countries throughout western Europe, as well as Turkey, Russia and Romania. Candidates had access to about 20 booths to learn about job types—finance, business development or product supply, for example—or local P&G offices. P&G representatives communicated in French, Spanish, German, Italian and English.

Lourdes Fuentes, a Geneva-based marketing executive with P&G, says the virtual fair is cost- and time-efficient because she can access it from her office and doesn’t have to spend a full day traveling. She tries to explain to potential candidates what P&G’s culture is like and which qualities are important for marketing. She says she has “met” some people with promise.

One candidate, Ioannis Boukas, heard about the P&G career fair on LinkedIn and logged in from work in Athens, Greece. At the fair, he learned about the firm’s international opportunities and got application advice from some P&G marketing managers and recruiters.

Mr. Boukas, 25, later decided it was worth taking a day off from work to attend an in-person P&G career fair. About six months and three in-person interviews later, he was hired as an assistant brand manager in Geneva.

Virtual career fairs serve as a “starting point” for many younger candidates, says Amy Ng, senior vice president of human resources at Citigroup.

Events like these are especially useful for what Ms. Ng calls “passive job seekers” or the large part of the population not actively seeking a job but interested in learning what is out there. This way, when they are ready to look or if they are laid off, they’ll “think Citi sounds like a great place to work, see how we interact with people,” she said.

Italian Furniture Design, expo closes with outstanding results!

One week ago the IFD virtual trade show kicked off and though everyone expected a successful event, no one could have known what an international success it would be. Now we have assembled the results to find our most outstanding virtual expo metrics yet.
